Pie rides – the results so far

When Where What Comments
13th April Norfolk Arms Ringinglow Steak and Ale Pie Too much ale and hardly any steak! One rider took it back and got a sandwich and a refund.   £2 a pint for selected beers on Tuesdays.
20th April The Grouse, Froggatt Steak Pie Superb home-made pie available in £6 small portions for hungry cyclists who don’t want too much weight in their stomachs for the climb back up to Fox House. Good pint of Deuchars.
27th April The Castle, Bradway Steak Pie Not really a pie, more a meat stew with a bit of puff pastry perched on top. Beer was good though – Farmers Blonde/Landlord.
4th May Sizzler Pub, Beighton Chicken Tandoori/Lamb Rogan Josh Not exactly a pie and not exactly haute cuisine but VFM at curry and a pint for £4.99. The Tandoori, unsurprisingly, came sizzling. The pint is supposed to be lager or smoothflow but when I told the barman that I didn’t mind paying extra for a pint of Tetley’s he threw it in for the price, and it wasn’t a bad pint either. After a 30 mile ride along the TPT nourishment was needed! Tetley beer pumps discriminate against left-handed barmen.
11th May Nags Head Inn, Loxley Steak and Mushroom Pie £7 gets a plate full of home cooked Pie, thick cut chips (virtually potato wedges) and mushy peas, or boiled potatoes and veg. Pie has rich heavy pasty on top, large pieces of mushroom and an adequate rather than generous amount of meat which with the accompaniments makes for a filling and tasty meal.
18th May Norfolk Arms Ringinglow Steak and Ale Pie By chance the ride got cut short just before round house and so it was back to the Norfolk Arms for a second try. £9.95 gets a very hot pie with veg and mash, veg fine, mash so-so, pie looked promising but was again low on the steak and high on gravy. Which came in useful for rehydrating the mashed potato but overall left a bit of a hole in this rider’s belly.
25th May Coach and Horses, Dronfield Steak and Ale Pie Took a bit of persuasion to get food here – seems booking in advance is necessary, and the kitchen only had capacity to feed two of the hungry riders. So in the end, for £9 each, we got reasonable platefuls of food. The pie had a solid, medium thickness crust with a moderate amount of meat. The mashed potato was reasonable but not great. The search for the best pie is slowly changing into a search for proper mashed potato!
