Cycle Maintenance Courses – a plug from Mick

Mick Nott asks us to plug the Cycle Maintenance Courses at ReCycleBikes , and Cyclesheffield duly obliges (well the suns out and we are all in a weekend mood).

So over to Mick…..

I am a tutor on the Cycle Maintenance Courses at ReCycleBikes.

We are always delighted if people enrol on them (and many of you have)

So if you are interested and want to talk about what is involved and taught then please drop in and discuss the course with the tutors.

Cycle Maintenance Courses.

Practical courses in cycle maintenance and repair.

You’ll start with cleaning and lubing and by the end of six sessions you’ll have given your bike a complete service from wheels to bottom bracket and back again.

Courses throughout the year – every half-term.

First course starts Tue 14 September.

Three (£40) or six (£75) weekly evening sessions 7-9.30 p.m.

You can transfer from the three to the six session course by paying the balance of the fee.

A Brompton Tale

A member writes:- I have just given a new (M type) brommy its first proper run (back from Rotherham to Sheffield via the canal and 5 weirs), and on 100psi Kojacks it is within a very few mins of my big bike times, and managed the ‘sprint from the new Corporation St bridge so you get all the green lights on the IRR through to the A61′ no problem.

Incidentally, this was at the end of a day that started with a cycle to centre of sheffield, a lift with chum to St Caths hospital Doncaster for a meeting with brommy in her small hatchback boot, then cycle to Doncaster station, get express to Meadowhall, cycle back to base @Rotherham (rather than wait for stopping train direct to Rotherham), cycle to Aldi for the Office Milk (my turn) – incl taking brommy round in trolley – and then cycle back to Crookesmoor at end of working day – all in glorious sunshine.

So there you go, cycling, especially little foldy sort, is fun, sociable, convenient and cheap once you’ve paid off the mortgage to buy it! I just love the feeling that I can just set off for a destination knowing there will always be one option or another for the return journey.

And yes I could have done all that on a £350 Dahon, but not so readily, and certainly not with the same fun at seeing people’s faces in Aldi/on towpath as i passed them, and of course the endless conversation openers with folk in offices/meetings when you walk in with the brommy under your arm.

Cycling in cold hilly cities

Sheffield Station Parking

Useful meeting with EM trains this morning. The PTE have founnd 26,000 to spend on cycle parking at the station, which will fund about another 100 spaces. There are issues around CCTV, seciruty and access which will need addressing, but there is no reason why this much-needed extra capacity shouldn’t go in pretty quickly. We also heard rumblings about bikes on trams…watch this space…

Sheffield City Region’s Transport Strategy

The South Yorkshire Joint Secretariat website has launched the public consultation documents for Sheffield City Region’s Transport Strategy. This consultation is a key part in the development of the South Yorkshire Third Local Transport Plan.

SYPTE have launched a suite of documents on the internet for people to view. These include the Draft Strategy in full, an Executive Summary and a questionnaire for people to provide us with their feedback and comments. These documents are available at: http://www.southyorks.gov.uk

We will also be distributing consultation leaflets to approximately 100 locations in South Yorkshire which include leisure centres, shops, libraries, town halls and health centres. The leaflet provides members of the public with a brief overview of the Draft Strategy and invites them to complete a short questionnaire.

The consultation will end on 15 October 2010 where all the responses will be collated and analysed. The feedback from the consultation will help us to finalise the Strategy in preparation for release in April 2011

The districts within Sheffield City Region have been asked if they would provide a link from their own websites to the suite of documents we have uploaded, Sheffield City Region have also agreed to provide the link. Through a new initiative and in an attempt to create a new audience SYPTE have created links from their Travel South Yorkshire Facebook page; the page is in it’s infancy but provides the opportunity to use social networking to engage people.

Cyclesheffield’s response to the consultation is as follows;-

Live local, shop local – cycle parking at all local shopping centres.(i.e. we shouldn’t have to ask for cycle parking on a piecemeal basis & then rely on the largesse of the Community Assemblies – anywhere there’s a shop there should be a properly installed, functional bike stand)

Darnall – Meadowhead cycle route offering an alternative to the Outer Ring Road. (particularly important if the speed limit on Bochum Parkway goes up to 50)

Default 20mph speed limits on all residential streets and in the City Centre.

Completion of Sheffield – Chesterfield route. (It seems to me there is more likelihood of this now that Nth Derbyshire has been defined as part of the Sheffield City region - see p.8)

Improvements to Stocksbridge – Sheffield corridor (Upper Don Valley)

Better integration between cycling and public transport, e.g. bikes carried on off-peak tram services.

Sheffield Cycle Speedway – activities

Sheffield Cycle Speedway have over 50 young people who are members and are always wanting to welcome more young people. They also plan to get get involved in family rides to expand their cycling activities past cycle speedway.

Cycle movement across the city centre cordon has gone from 1,305 in 1980 to 4,264 in 2009, a threefold or 200% increase in cycling to the City Centre in the past three decades. we may not be up to Copenhagen standards yet but we’re getting there!
