Walkley – active travel corridor

At the Cyclesheffield meeting in January 2010 we decided to investigate measures to improve this popular cycling route. We hope the improvements would also bring benefits to the many pedestrian usrs of this route as well.

Our initial ideas listed below have been presented to the Central Community Assembly for consideration

  • regularisation of access out of and into the car park adjacent the Arts Tower once the scaffolding has been completely removed.(for example having a central filter lane for bikes coming down the hill and turning right into the car park, and a filter on to the uphill stretch, possibly being in itself the commencement of a cycle lane proceeding up Winter St.)
  • a cycle lane up Winter St and Crookes Valley Park Road, continuing through the crossing of barber Rd and Crookesmoor Rd and up to Commonside.
  • for Pedestrians: improvements to the visibility/safety of the pedestrian crossing just before Harcourt Road.
  • for Pedestrians and cyclists: consideration of how crossing Harcourt Road, a very wide and difficult junction, could be improved.
  • ASLs at the traffic lights on Crooksmoor Road.
  • further cycle parking at Commonside and at Walkley.

We are also keen to have additional cycle parking stands outside the Town Hall/at the top of Fargate: there’s always a need for more cycle parking but particularly at times when the city centre is hosting an event or fair of some sort.

Additionally, we are keen to take every opportunity to raise the development of a widespread 20mph speed limit for the benefit of all road/pavement users in sheffield, and would value the opportunity to seek the views of the assembly on this matter.
