This page lays out our key campaigning policies & principles.
Cyclesheffield exists to promote cycling in Sheffield.
Cyclesheffield aims to raise the profile of cycling in Sheffield by:
Lobbying politicians and appropriate authorities, and running campaigns in the local media
Supporting national initiatives and campaigns to promote cycling
Supporting marketing initiatives of Council and Cycle Champion to encourage all people of all backgrounds and abilities to cycle
Supplying a stall at local festivals and other relevant events
Use of appropriate technology to campaign and to keep members informed
Participation in the production of a Sheffield Cycling Map
Promoting cycling as a sporting activity, linking to local cycle clubs’ activities and information
Connecting with young people through events in conjunction with other partners
Monitoring and reporting as appropriate on poor highway maintenance and safety hazards
Holding social events.
Cyclesheffield supports the following principles:
Cycles are legitimate road vehicles
All road users should show mutual respect for each others’ needs whether they be walking, riding a bicycle, riding a horse or driving a motor vehicle
The provision of cycle facilities should improve connectivity to the city centre, shopping centres, our countryside and all districts of Sheffield
The carriageway should be made safe for all users without the need for segregation
Cyclists should not be compelled to use cycle facilities
Cycle facilities should be safe, appropriate and well maintained.
Encourage cycling by engaging with all forms of cycling to create common events
Work closely with appropriate partners to deliver common campaigns and goals.
Cyclesheffield supports the following measures:
Expansion of Sheffield’s cycle network
Special treatment for certain locations, particularly junctions
Support Sustrans projects
Effective and strategically placed cycle parking facilities in all public facilities including schools
Responsible and safe cycling in parks
Employment of dedicated cycle transport planners by Sheffield City Council
Council Cycle Training Schemes for people of all ages, and initiatives to encourage young people to cycle
Promote connectivity of different transport modes by providing walking & cycling routes to stations, tram stops, bus stations and park & ride locations
Home Zones
20 MPH limits in all residential areas and on roads with non-segregated on-road signed cycle routes
Reduce congestion and put in place measures to reduce car dependence
Employers to encourage and facilitate the use of cycles by their employees and to provide appropriate traning and cycling-related facilities
Rigorous enforcement of traffic law
Systematic monitoring and maintenance of cycle paths by the City Council
Support and publicity for cycle-friendly retailers and other services
Police & Paramedics on bicycles
Subsidised, regulated and integrated public transport
Measures to make it possible to use cycling flexibly with public transport
Measures to improve Air Quality
Rides Policy
Cyclesheffield organised rides will always start somewhere that is accessible by bike or cycle-carrying public transport.
