Bike Week Review from Polly & Tony
We thought Bike Week was really successful, certainly the events we were involved with:
The Friday Night Ride was well attended as usual and the evening glorious.
The Cycling Festival was great and our Cycle Shefffield/Sustrans table was directly opposite the trail bikes display, which was utterly amazing. We got
a lot of interest in rides and routes particularly with several potential new members and 1 who signed up on the spot. One thing several people asked
for was a map of the national Sustrans routes (we’d put our poster map up as part of the display) – we were asked for the same thing at the Green Fair
too. We just get one each year as part of our membership. We did suggest people went to the website for routes obviously but they really did want a
poster map so we’re going to investigate whether we can get some.
The Family Ride and picnic was fun. We did a report for the CTC Family Rides blogspot.
We were too tired, hungry and rushed to make the Monday films.
The Tuesday breakfast was well attended and enjoyed but I think there were slightly fewer people than last year. Unfortunately we didn’t get enough
volunteers to take the stall but we just shared the Pedal Ready table until 10.30 am with John, who’d come down for his breakfast, roped in to help
until 9.30 but we had Eli and he was good but beginning to wane by then, not surprisingly having been there since 8am!
There were 16 of us on the Routes Round Town Ride I think, including 4 women new to it all – 1 working at Hallam but living in Leeds (I think) and
wanting routes between the Uni sites, 1 a friend of Ed Astill’s girlfriend!, 1 our ex Polish teacher who just happened upon us on the FNR and joined in
and then came along on Tuesday and also signed up to Cycle Sheffield! and 1 a mother with a 2 year old in a front seat with her balance bike strapped on
behind and her 5 year old riding solo really proficiently along with the rest of us (Mick, you did a wonderful job there)!
She cycles from Nether Edge to Hunters Bar school and back every day and her sister often manages a
fair bit of it on her balance bike – phenomenal. We went down to the station, along to the Sheaf walk, across to Bramall Lane and then London
Road (where the family left us for home), under to Waitrose and along the Porter to the cemetery, then back along Pomona Street, up Sunny Bank to
Brunswick Street and Broomspring Lane, then via Lynwood to The Francis Newton (the old Aunt Saliies pub).
After more beer than good for cycling (for me anyway) as it was really warm, we called it a day there but a few went via Portobello etc back to the
station; Mick aiming for the Sheffield Tap but I think everyone went off home so he didn’t stop.
We didn’t manage the Three Merry Lads Ride either – although our Polish friend joined that as well.
(comment from Ian, quite a good turnout of riders, around 20 I think. I caught up with some people Id not seen for ages. A gentle ride out to the 3 Merry Lads and a pint in the evening sunshine)
The AGM was attended by 13 of us, fewer than usual but the discussion was good and I hope everyone was pleased with the outcome. Tim was certainly
delighted to see his new election and voting scheme used. Everyone appreciated the food too (and although Michael McGowan didn’t find us he
evidently enjoyed the pub!!)
The Green Fair was extremely successful for new Cycle Sheffield members – 8 paid up and at least 4 more with forms filled in but taken home as they
couldn’t remember their details for the Standing Order slip!
