Good News Week for Sheffield Cycling

Written by . Filed under news. No comments.

We had a good day on Thursday. The news that commuter cycling has doubled in Sheffield over the past ten years made the front page in the Sheffield Telegraph:

Read the story here.

We’re not resting on our laurels though, there’s still a lot to do.

The Star ran with the story that mobile bus lane cameras are to be introduced, something we’ve been pushing for for a while:

Hopefully these can be used to catch taxi drivers who queue in bike lanes as well.

Cycling & Walking on the up in Sheffield

Written by . Filed under news. No comments.

Preliminary analysis of the city’s cordon counts reveals that in the 2001 – 2011 period, cycling is now up by 91% and walking is up by 46%.

Lots of other modes have lost passengers over the past year, including bus and tram. Number of car passengers hasn’t changed, but the number
of cars has reduced – i.e. higher car occupancy.

Folk train rides again!

Written by . Filed under news. No comments.

On a dark and rainy december night, the good folk of the Hope Valley were out celebrating getting an extra train – the 1814, which is just about the right time for getting home for many folks.

And of course there was some music…

There were 4 bikes on the train – 2 folders and 2 encumbrances (name the folder crew give to regular bikes, bit of a play on recumbents – mind you these people are probably hooded monks of the Mac order as well)

The real Folk Train runs on the fourth Tuesday of each month (not necessarily the last Tuesday!).The next one being the 20th December.

Chancellors Autumn Statement

Written by . Filed under news. No comments.

Here’s what the Chancellors Autumn statement means for Yorkshire & the Humbs in terms of transport infrastructure:-

A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley – Capacity and safety improvements at four roundabouts on A164 & dualling of 1.4km section of A164
A18-A180 Link (North east Lincolnshire) – Link road acting as a bypass for Immingham, relieving heavy lorry movements from the village
A6182 White Rose Way Improvement Scheme (Doncaster) – Dualling of 1.9km of carriageway and replacement of two existing roundabouts with high capacity signalised junctions
Access York Park and Ride – Two new park and ride sites for York
Leeds Rail Growth – Two new railway stations at Kirkstall Forge and Appley Bridge to the West of Leeds
Lincoln Eastern Bypass– Bypass to the east of Lincoln
Supertram additional vehicles (Sheffield) – Four additional tram vehicles for the Supertram network

Not much in the way of cycling then, although it will be up to local campaigners to ensure that if these road schemes go ahead cyclists get decent facilities out of them.

Note the last item, but will these be tram-trains or just regular trams?

…How many trips

Written by . Filed under news. No comments.

…Under five miles are made by car again?
This info used to be readily available from DfT’s annual National Travel Survey (NTS) publication, but it now seems to be much harder to find.

However, Roger Geffen has done the math:  you can calculate the figure for 2010 from NTS table 0308:
http://assets.dft.gov.uk/statistics/tables/nts0308.xls

Adding up the number of trips under 5 miles made by participants in the National Travel Survey by car or van, either as a driver or as a passenger (i.e. the sum of cells B12 to D13), you get 352,000.
The total number of trips under 5 miles made by NTS participants (i.e. the sum of cells B24 to D24) is 636,000.

352K/636K comes to 55%.

Travel by car or van, either as driver or passenger, accounts for 20% of trips under 1 mile, and 39% of trips under 2 miles.
