If you look closely you can see our bikes stored on the Portsmouth – IoWight hovercraft
The hovercraft can take two bikes on each flight, and the compartments they are stored in are rather sweetly called the pannier. The journey takes 10 minutes. The Isle of Wight has a Round the Island route which is quite demanding – allow two days if you want to really enjoy it, there is lots to stop off and see – as well as a couple of Sustrans rail-trail routes and the Sunshine Trail which is more suitable for MTB’s. Oh and a steam railway…
If the hovercraft is too space-age for you, you can buy a ticket from anywhere in the UK to either Ryde via Portsmouth, stations on the Island Line (operated by vintage tube trains) or via Lymington to Yarmouth, and take your bike.
